Newton Knows Our Neighborhood - Hancock Park, CA 90004 & 90020

Understated wealth is the quiet legacy of this first of the “suburbs” of Los Angeles in the early 1920’s.  Behind the determined iron gates and fences lay mansions with drawing rooms and recital halls that were built almost a century ago and still utilized by the patrons of the arts.
When a big name TV music composer has a plumbing challenge, like many of his neighbors, he calls Newton Plumbing, a trusted name for over 60 years in providing Hancock Park with quality Los Angeles plumbing services.

Dispersed within the compound like atmosphere is the unassuming beauty of the Wilshire Country Club, named for Henry Hancock, a one time surveyor for the city of Los Angeles going back to the mid 1800’s.  Hancock was elected to the State of California Assembly representing the 1st District from 1858 to 1860.

Sadly, for a family named Rocha and fortuitously for Hancock a lawyer, Henry Hancock worked for the Rocha family to aid them with their efforts to prove their claim to Rancho La Brea.  The Rocha’s finally won their claim, but like so many other rancheros, their legal expenses left them broke.  In 1860 Jose Jorge Rocha, the son of Don Antonio Jose Rocha, deeded Rancho La Brea to Henry Hancock.

The main attraction of the area is world famous La Brea Tar Pits.  Other attractions of the area are the Los Angeles Tennis Club and the “Miracle Mile district.

Hancock Park owes its name to developer-philanthropist G. Allen Hancock who subdivided the property in the 1920s.  G. Allen Hancock was born and raised in an inherited home and part of the original 4,400 acres acquired by his father.

Quiet streets with conspicuously grand homes are the rule rather than the exception.  A park like atmosphere gives one a feel of tranquility to a peaceful oasis that is alive and well amidst the bustle of downtown Los Angeles.
