By chance, Manhattan Beach was named by the flip of a coin in the early 1900’s.  Much earlier, Manhattan Beach, before the coin toss, was part of the original Spanish land grant named Rancho Sausal Redondo.

The Rancho was sold to Sir Robert Burnett who used the land to raise sheep and cattle.  In 1873, Sir Robert Burnett leased the land to Daniel Freeman and returned to his native Scotland.  Freeman moved to the ranch with his family and increased the livestock count and planted many citrus trees.

The drought of 1875 ruined the livestock industry and Freeman turned to dry farming.  Freeman purchased the land in the 1880s but ended up selling it.  The original ranch of approximately 25,000 acres extended from the areas as far north of what is now Playa del Rey and farther east to Inglewood and as far south as Hermosa Beach.

Later in its development the Manhattan Beach area was called "Shore Acres" by George Peck, who then owned a major section of the north end of town.  Another developer, John Merrill, wanted to call the town Manhattan Beach after his hometown in New York, hence the famous coin toss.  Lots were advertised at $350 each!  The terms: $50 down and installment payments of $10 per month.

The first dwellings were mostly beach cottages. Manhattan Beach was promoted as a place to vacation, a summer resort.  In 1901 two wooden piers were erected; one at Center Street and one at Marine Avenue.  The Center Street pier supported a wave motor to supposedly generate power for the Strand lighting system.  As rumor has it, part of the wave motor still lies buried in the sands at the shore end of the present pier.  There is some doubt that any wave motor of the time ever worked.

In the late 1800’s the Santa Fe Railroad laid tracks from Los Angeles to the Redondo Beach wharf passing through what is now Manhattan Beach, allowing passengers a local destination for a fun day at the beach.  Santa Fe terminated their passenger service in 1918.
Prior to that the Pacific Railway, Pacific Electric Company had installed a track along the oceanfront extending from Los Angeles to Santa Monica and then south to Redondo Beach passing through Manhattan.  The tracks were just west of The Strand where the bicycle path is today.  The Red Cars would run on this line until 1940.

In 1946 Newton Plumbing founded by Ernest I. Newton began servicing the Manhattan Beach area.  Newton offered extraordinarily great service and, as it is today, at a fair and reasonable price.

Since the 1960’s Manhattan Beach has doubled as a bedroom community to LAX and Greater Los Angeles, as well as a very nice seaside resort.
