Newton Knows Our Neighborhood – Torrance, CA 90501-90506-90277-90278
Tongva Indians were the first known inhabitants of what is now called Torrance. When Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was the first known explorer to have visited the area in 1542, the Tongva people were traders and traded with passers by who anchored their ships along the shore. In 1784, Juan Jose Dominguez, received a 75,000-acre Spanish land grant that was called Rancho San Pedro. It was the very the first Spanish land grant in Alta California.
In 1912 the Dominguez family sold 2791 acres of land to Jared Sidney Torrance. Jared Torrance envisioned an industrial town with paved streets, sewer and water lines underground and landscaped before anyone came to live in it. The idea was that jobs would be waiting for new arrivals as they arrived.
Union Oil Company was among the first businesses to establish themselves in Torrance. A world famous architect named Frederick L. Olmstead, Jr. was hired to design the lay out of the new city. Industrial/commercial zones were planned, located for the east side of town, so the prevailing westerly winds would blow factory smoke away from the residential areas on the Westside of town.
In 1921 oil was discovered in Torrance. In just six months or so, the city's population grew from 1,800 to 2,750 people. By 1925, 582 Torrance oil wells were producing black gold, as it was fondly known at the time.
The same year that Newton Plumbing was founded, 1946, the original Torrance city charter was voted on and ratified by a vote of the people. This was the beginning of a kinship between the good folks of Torrance and the bright new Newton Plumbing Company that has thrived over the years. That relationship today is stronger than ever.
Rapid growth in the Torrance area began after World War II as wartime industries were transformed into aerospace and related industries. Large housing developments were built in the 1950s and 1960s to accommodate the new population.
At one time Torrance owned the title of having the world’s largest shopping center, The Del Amo Mall. Torrance has become one of the largest cities on Los Angeles County today with a population of about 137,000.
Certainly, Jared Torrance’s vision was more than realized almost 100 years later and Torrance has distinguished itself in many ways.
