The well-known Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is located in Westchester, CA, and several area hotels offer a complimentary shuttle to and from the airport. In the late 1920s, the airport (originally called Mines Field) brought people and a new economy to an otherwise agricultural area. Westchester’s warm, dry climate provided ample ground for farming in the 20th century. In the 60s, planes were finally able to make cross-country flights without having to stop for fuel, greatly increasing visitation to Westchester. Movie director Howard Hughes also had an airport in Westchester – today, Runway Road is the only remnant, in place where the old runway was.
Both visitors and residents of Westchester enjoy several nearby beaches, including El Segundon, Santa Monica, Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach. Indoor recreation includes the Westchester Recreation Center, complete with barbecue pits and picnic areas; an auditorium and community room; and basketball courts, tennis courts and a baseball diamond.
College students who want to get away from cold weather can attend Loyola Marymount University, a Catholic University that follows Jesuit tradition. The university offers a law program as well as undergraduate and graduate study. If you’re the more creative type, check out the Otis College of Art and Design, which includes the Galef Fine Arts Center as of 2001.
Anyone who’s seen the uber-popular movie “Pretty Woman” is familiar with Beverly Hills and the shopping mecca of Rodeo Drive – both a short hop from Westchester. A great way to see the area is to hop on an Oldies Tour. Climb into a vintage car and cruise around with a fun, clever and knowledgeable guide to check out Hollywood, Bel Air and Beverly Hills. Plus, the tour guides are usually pretty flexible – just speak up if you want to stop for a photo op or to grab a cup of coffee.
