Newton Knows Our Neighborhood, Westwood, CA 90025

Westwood Village began as a state of the art, upscale shopping village when it opened in the midst of the Great Depression. Seven years later Newton Plumbing began operation, loyally serving many of the businesses and residents of Westwood as it continues to do today by offering their Los Angeles plumbing services to this area and many others.
Known by locals as“The Village,” it was created and built by the Janss Investment Company. The Janss Company was run by Harold and Edwin Janss and their father, Peter. Arthur Letts Sr., Harold Janss’ father in-law, was also part of the partnership and is credited for developing much of adjoining Westwood and the newly constructed UCLA campus.
Arthur Letts Sr. was the founder of Broadway Department Stores and Bullock's Department Stores. Letts Sr. was also responsible for developing a great deal of Hollywood. He also developed and built a great part the UCLA campus. This was done through the Janss Development Co.
Westwood was developed as an autonomous shopping district, not just for the residents of Westwood, but also for the university. Its early success was complemented by the fact that UCLA had selected the Westwood Hills as its new home in 1926.
When Westwood shopping district opened, the original design was considered one of the most well planned and beautifully laid out of commercial areas in the nation. Harold Janss had hired major architects and instructed them to adopt a Mediterranean theme, with clay tile roofs, decorative Spanish tile, paseos, patios and courtyards. Buildings located at strategic points, including theaters, used towers to serve as beacons for drivers on Wilshire Boulevard.
Janss picked the first line up of businesses and determined their location in the neighborhood. The area opened with 34 businesses, despite the Great Depression, and by 1939 had 452 businesses operating in the immediate area. Today Westwood Village houses many small and large shops and restaurants.
A number of notable buildings remain from the early years of Westwood Village, including The Fox Theater, (or Village Theater), that features a landmark 170-foot white Spanish Revival/Moderne tower. Built in 1931 this cinema later became famous for the many movie premieres held there. The Janss Dome, (Janss Investment Company Building), the first building to be built in Westwood Village in 1929, is another village landmark.
Let one not forget the upscale community that surrounds “the village.” The dwellings on the residential streets that surround UCLA and “the village” seem to be born of urban utopia. The Hammer Museum is full of relevant works of art and the Old Soldiers Home, which was established in 1887, has always been a beautiful place dedicated to all veterans of U.S. Forces. The Pierce Brothers Cemetery is significant as it is the resting place for dozens of very famous people of fame and fortune. Westwood’s “Golden Mile” exemplifies wealth and impressive high-rise architecture. The Mormon Temple on Santa Monica Blvd. is impressive as well. Indeed, Westwood is a very special place.
