Newton Knows the Neighborhood - Pacific Palisades, CA 90272

A unique village in Los Angeles County, “The Palisades,” as it is known locally, sits between Malibu on the west and Brentwood/Santa Monica on the southeast and is home to many well known and successful people.

Home to Will Rogers State Park, The Bel Air Bay Club and The Riviera Country Club, known as the “Grand Hotel of Golf,” Riviera’s Clubhouse officially opened in 1928.

Another gem of the area is The Leo Carrillo Estate, an occasional Newton Plumbing customer over the years, is located on the dividing line of Pacific Palisades and Santa Monica. Description from an article in the Palisadian Post, August 11, 2005, reports “In bygone days, a host of film people and politicians might have been socializing in the large barbecue area between the main home and guest house. The piercing call of peacocks might have echoed throughout the neighborhood.” After all, this was the rancho-home of movie star Leo Carrillo, a native of Santa Monica and friend of Will Rogers.

Carrillo, famous for his role as Pancho in the 1950 TV series The Cisco Kid, purchased most of his 14 acres in 1932. One can almost hear the hoof beats of the charging horses with Leo and Will in the saddle as they charged up the hills from Leo’s hacienda and his friend Will’s house just above Sunset Boulevard; a special time in Los Angeles that the rest of us can only dream of.

On Independence Day each year in July, the Palisades Chamber of Commerce sponsors day-long events which include a 5K and 10 K Run, a parade down Sunset Boulevard and a fireworks.

Rustic Canyon is a more isolated part of the Palisades where there was an exclusive club, The Uplifters Ranch, founded by Will Rogers and some of his cronies at the time. This exclusive cliché lived on until the 1950’s.

Pacific Palisades, Castellemare and the Palisades Highlands are communities that have an east coast flavor reminiscent of many of the great communities in New York and Connecticut.
