Newton Knows Our Neighborhood – Venice Beach, CA 90291

Famous Old Apartment Building in Venice – When disaster struck with the hot water heaters at the locally famous Morrison Arms in the vicinity of the boardwalk in Venice, CA, the management astutely called Newton Plumbing, who has been serving Westside residences and commercial institutions since Ernie Newton started this family company in the 1940’s.
The “Morrison,” rumored to be one of the last residences of Jim Morrison, was built in the early 1900’s and was one of the most modern and trendiest structures of its kind at the time.  Situated but a stone’s throw from the famous Venice Ocean Front Walk, this imposing structure looks like a virtual fortress.

As many L.A. residents know, Venice Beach is a funky yet historical place, not only known for its bizarre social happenings but also for its serious artists.

Sidewalk cafes are aplenty and one can people watch for hours and not be disappointed.  There is an unseen kinetic energy that permeates the air in this one of a kind community that includes The Poets Wall, Muscle Beach, the famous Venice Pier, where bicycle riders cruise by the street vendors plying their wares in a carnival-like atmosphere.

The weekends get a little more bizarre as people from outside the community join in.  Bright colored costumes or no costumes at all, are the norm, (if you can call anything about the boardwalk normal.)

Weaving through the coastal magic of Venice is the bike path on its way along the shore to Redondo Beach.  A great avenue for esthetics and healthy exercise as its winds flow past Marina del Rey, El Segundo, Playa del Rey, Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach along the way.

Back on the border of Venice and Santa Monica, a potpourri of folks enjoy a meal at the old Firehouse Restaurant, another Newton customer, where competitive body builders from Gold’s Gym and Powerhouse Gym fuel their bodies and their special dietary needs are accommodated.

Other Venice attractions include the Venice Pier and the vintage canals which were loosely modeled after Venice Italy.  The canals were the brainchild of an ambitious land developer named Abbott Kinney whose dream never quite materialized as he saw it but who put his personal stamp on the area that is still a major part of Venice Beach’s identity today.
As one motors down Abbot Kinney Boulevard you will see an eclectic collection of interesting shops and cafes.  Truly Venice Beach is an interesting and significant place in the fabric of Los Angeles lore.
